Anaesthetic Cake

This recipe came from a Greek friend and is so-called because of the strange, but not unpleasant, effect it has of slightly numbing the mouth.

juice of 2 oranges
1 tsp soda bicarbonate
1 Tblsp grpund cloves
1 Tblsp ground cinnamon
4ozs 125g vegetable oil
4 fl ozs 125mls water
2 fl ozs 50mls brandy (optional)
4ozs 125g currants
1oz 25g walnut pieces

Add the soda bicarbonate to the orange juice
Add all the ingredients except the flour and mix well. Fold in the flour.
Pour mixture into a 1lb bread tin. Cook at 400F, 200C, Gas Mk 6 for 1 hour.
Turn out on to a cooling rack. Allow to cool before slicing.
